Say it simply

Complexity is often a place to hide.

Athanasius defended one of the hardest ideas in the Christian faith in a short book ordinary readers could follow.

Luther wrote a catechism simple enough for a father to teach at the dinner table. Billy Graham preached the same plain message for sixty years.

Three leaders across sixteen centuries, each with deep learning. Each one chose to be understood over being impressive. God told Habakkuk to do the same: write the vision and make the vision plain.

The idea. Complexity is often a place to hide. If I cannot say a thing simply, I may not understand the thing, or I may not want to be held to my words. A plain sentence can be acted on, repeated, and checked.

The action for this week. Take the most important thing your team needs to understand this quarter. Write one sentence with no jargon. Read the sentence to someone outside your field. If that person cannot say the idea back, rewrite the sentence.

“Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.”Habakkuk 2:2, ESV
