Your job is to equip, not to do the work alone

Your output is not what you produce. Your output is what your people can do.

Paul lists the leaders Christ gave to the church: apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers. Then he says what those leaders are for.

They are not given to do the ministry. They are given “to equip the saints for the work of ministry.” The leader’s job is to make workers.

Many leaders, in churches and in companies, have this backward. The most capable person does most of the work, the team watches, and everyone calls that leadership.

The idea. Delegating authority is the fourth step of the LEADS Path. Every task you keep because you do the task best is a task nobody else will learn. Your output is not what you produce. Your output is what your people can do.

The action for this week. Find one task you do every week that someone else could learn. This week, do the task with that person watching. Next week, watch that person do the task. The week after, hand the task over, along with the authority to change how the task is done.

“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.”Ephesians 4:11–12, ESV
